Katarina began ice-skating at age five. Then, her abilities became apparent and then in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered an institution specifically designed for children who have athletic talents. In this school, she got to know the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. It was her first appearance. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt drew the attention of everyone and she has dominated her sport ever since. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' bronze medal for figure skating in a close-fought competition. Her victory four years ago was a lot closer. She did not win the free skating contest however, she was awarded gold for her performances during the compulsory figure and short program. Witt was the first woman ever since Sonja Haenie to be a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame After enjoying great success in the field of acting, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Although she didn't get a single medal she delighted fans with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt's entry into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame occurred in the year 1995.
